Turn of the screwTalented schoolboy and treble singer, Tom Deazley aged 14 from Belfast, will travel to Moscow in August for his role as ‘Miles’ in Benjamin Britten’s opera, The Turn of The Screw, which will be performed at The Kolobov Novaya Opera Theatre of Moscow.

This much-loved opera will be produced by Northern Ireland Opera and staged in Moscow for a two-night run later this summer, supported by the Arts Council of Northern Ireland and The British Council.
Benjamin Britten’s The Turn of the Screw is widely regarded as one of the finest operas by perhaps the greatest British composer.  Scored for a small chamber orchestra and a cast of six, its haunting music and tautly dramatic plot (based on a Henry James novella) has also made it one of the most popular twentieth century operas.

The Moscow performance will shine a light on NI Opera as Northern Ireland’s national opera company whose  2012 tour of The Turn of The Screw  received considerable critical acclaim: “a Screw that any company would be proud to tour…remarkable” (Independent on Sunday); “absolutely superb” (Opera magazine); “electrifying” (The Daily Telegraph); “not to be missed” (The Sunday Times).

Commenting on the opportunity, Tom said, “I’m very excited to travel to Moscow to perform in The Turn of The Screw.  This is a fantastic opportunity for me, and I feel privileged to be representing Northern Ireland internationally.”

NI Opera's Artistic Director, Oliver Mears said, "We’re very excited to be performing in Russia for the first time, and we’re proud to have been asked to showcase Northern Irish opera in this UK-Russia Year of Culture.  The Turn of the Screw is an incredibly atmospheric opera which I’m sure will be well received in Moscow and in Northern Ireland when it tours next spring”

Ciaran Scullion, Head of Music, Arts Council of Northern Ireland, commented, “The performance of this Northern Ireland produced opera in Moscow by one of our best young artistic companies, celebrates the quality of our arts sector internationally.  Tom has a wonderful career opportunity to perform to an international audience, see how an opera is staged there and bring this experience back to his colleagues in NI Opera.  The Arts Council wishes Tom and NI Opera every success.”
