«During this trying summer I thought I wouldn't get back to writing Umbrella newsletters. However, the Umbrella Gathering, „Excellence through Collaboration“ in Kolomna (https://yadi.sk/i/gFJc8AiDbnY7x ) gave me a lot of new and positive energy. Thanks to the electric atmosphere created by 60 outstanding representatives from 34 Teachers’ Associations from throughout Russia, my batteries were recharged with enough power to light an entire city. With this new vigor I felt an urge to put together this latest newsletter. Now on the eve of Thanksgiving, I would like to sincerely thank all of you for your hard work, unflagging support and glowing enthusiasm.
This newsletter will be for those who like to teach young learners (TEYL) and for those who find teaching children and grandchildren the most challenging job. If you are not in this category, just share the newsletter with those who are. As Peter Stepichev (MELTA rep) said at Umbrella meeting “When we share, we multiply!»
Ages ago (in the previous century) I was keen on teaching young learners. In fact, very young learners (ages 4 — 10)! I even developed my own system, approaches and materials. Recently, I see what great textbooks have now appeared (Check on M.V. Verbitskaya’s “Forward”!), and the new techniques that have been developed. One thing that has remained unchanged is the need to captivate children as early as possible!
Following the accepted pattern of Umbrella newsletters, I will use a central theme as the structural backbone and will share materials which have attracted my attention lately. A lot of TEYL teachers already use Eric Carle's classic, "The Very Hungry Caterpillar.” People in many countries have been "charmed ...with its simple memorable story, striking illustrations and the gimmicky holes on each of its “pages.” Speaking metaphorically, I see you as insatiable caterpillars with an unquenched thirst for knowledge that turns you in beautiful butterflies. В эти предпраздничные дни, когда воздух полон творчества, красивых сказок и занимательных рассказов, мы рады объявить о начале конкурса литературной программы обмена «Между строк». Этот уникальный семинар для школьников, заинтересованных в совершенствовании писательского мастерства, из России, США и арабских стран пройдет летом 2015 года во всемирно известном Писательском центре Университета Айовы.
В конкурсе могут принять участие российские школьники 16-18 лет, которые соответствуют критериям отбора и пришлют полные, правильно оформленные заявки до 5 февраля 2015 года.
Российских школьников будет сопровождать учитель, который также будет отобран в ходе открытого конкурса. Изучайте критерии для сопровождающего и подавайте заявки!
Программа проходит на английском языке, поэтому хорошее знание английского обязательно для всех участников.

В 2015-16 учебном году факультет Гуманитарных наук и Департамент иностранных языков Национального исследовательского университета Высшая школа экономики (НИУ ВШЭ) открывают новую образовательную программу «Иностранные языки и межкультурная коммуникация» на уровне бакалавриата (диплом академического бакалавра) и магистратуры (диплом магистра лингвистики).
Программа ориентирована на изучение основ межкультурной коммуникации и нескольких иностранных языков с обязательным изучением английского языка как первого иностранного языка. В рамках программы возможны две специализации: преподавание иностранных языков и перевод.
Специфика программы:
- поступлении с любым иностранным языком с последующим изучением английского языка как первого;
- обязательное изучении двух иностранных языков и возможное изучении третьего иностранного языка (в том числе восточных и славянских);
- возможность осознанного выбора специализации после 1-го курса;
- выбор дополнительных дисциплин для изучения из других профессиональных программ НИУ ВШЭ (майнеров);
- системная научно-исследовательская работа с 1-го курса;
- регулярные встречи с выдающимися специалистами по направлению подготовки.
Продолжительность обучения — 4 года в бакалавриате и 2 года в магистратуре. Кол-во бюджетных мест – 30 в бакалавриате и 15 в магистратуре. Прием по результатам ЕГЭ и/или результатам олимпиад.
После освоения программ бакалавриата можно поступать на любую магистерскую программу НИУ ВШЭ.

EVO2015 Call for Participation
Dear EFL/ESL Educator,
Since 2001, the Electronic Village Online, a project of TESOL's CALL Interest Section, has been offering free online professional development sessions to language teachers world-wide.
It is my pleasure to announce the Call for Participation for the Electronic Village Online (EVO) 2015. This year, we are offering 13 fabulous five-week sessions on a variety of topics, including teaching pronunciation, using Moodle, creating electronic textbooks, flipped learning, making Machinima in Second Life, using Minecraft to teach English, and more.

1ST MELTA INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE
LANGUAGE IN CULTURE AND CULTURE IN LANGUAGE
Moscow, September 25-26, 2009
The Conference was jointly organized by Moscow Association of English Language Teachers, Institute for the humanities and Informational Technologies and newspaper English of the Publishing House “The First of September”
- 250 participants of the conference have granted their approval to the conference held and their satisfaction with the ways the conference was organized, hosted and held.
- The conference featured plenary speeches during the first day and workshops on the second day by such visiting lecturers as: Michal Snyder (the USA), David Wansborough (Astralia), Neil Ballantyne (the UK), Pexos Kostas (Greece), Bradley Gorsky (the USA), Amara Telleen (the USA)
- In their presentations and discussions Russian scholars have underlined the necessity of paying more attention to the development of axiological, cognitive and cultural aspects of English language teaching. The students’ awareness of cultural environment is the most important component of language learning.
- The conference resolved to hold MELTA conferences once in two years and in the intervals to convene Autumn Forums to discuss the most important issues.
- The Cultural program included the net working event, concert and a theatrical performance.
- A collection of research articles by both Higher institutions and school teachers has been published.
- We are grateful to all the people and establishments who have sponsored and supported the conference: the English Language Office of the American Embassy in Moscow, Cambridge university Press, Macmillan Publishers LTD, British Council, MM Publishers, NATE, SPELTA, CHELTA, Kalmyk English teachers’ association, the institution IGUMO and its Rector Marina Volynkina. We could not have managed without their help.
- 57 concurrent sessions and workshops were run on the second Conference day according to the topics of the Conference:

- Teaching Literature
- Language teaching and learning methods
- Internet Technologies
- Communicative competence
The first MELTA Conference marked the beginning of school teachers’ active participation and proved the necessity of the closer link between these two stages of language learning and teaching.
